Staff report

Youngstown

Judge Nathaniel R. Jones, an internationally known civil-rights leader, will be the keynote speaker at the Mahoning Bar Association Law Day luncheon at noon Wednesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel.

The event will be hosted by the Mahoning County Bar Association and the Youngstown Kiwanis Club.

Jones was born and reared in Youngstown and is a graduate of South High School, Youngstown College (now Youngstown State University), and the Youngstown College of Law. President Jimmy Carter appointed Jones to serve on the United States Court of Appeals in 1979, where Jones served until his retirement in 2002. He conferred with Nelson Mandela to promote the abolition of apartheid. Jones consulted with the drafters of South Africa’s new constitution and served as an observer for the country’s first democratic elections.

On Feb. 20, 2003, the U.S. Congress enacted a law to name the new federal courthouse in Youngstown the Nathaniel R. Jones Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse. The building that bears his name is located blocks away from his birthplace.

A grant from the Mahoning County Law Library Association will allow county high-school students and members of the YSU Moot Court team to be guests at the luncheon.

The luncheon is part of a week of activities celebrating the law.
