YOUNGSTOWN

First Night Youngstown is seeking entries for its annual admission-button design competition. This year’s design must depict the Youngstown Parking Garage, on the corner of West Boardman and Phelps Streets, downtown.

The winning artist will receive $50 and admission buttons for his or her immediate family for the New Year’s Eve entertainment event. The winner also will be the honored guest in the Christmas parade.

The button series, which began last year, highlights downtown’s unique and historic buildings and architecture. The winning design will be featured on the FNY 2014 button and all promotional materials.

The Youngstown Parking Garage was designed by noted architect Barton E. Brooke and completed in 1926. The Classical Revival style five-story building was built as the automobile was just becoming a mainstay in American culture. It has buff brick and terra cotta decorative accents – winged tires and accent bands – on the front facade.

Button designs may be created using any art medium, including photography, drawing, painting, collage, mixed or digital media. The exterior of the garage and its unique architectural elements, must be featured. The scene must be at night and include fireworks and the phrases “First Night Youngstown 2014” and “The Place to be on New Year’s Eve.”

An entry form can be downloaded at firstnightyoungstownoh.com/. The form and the entry art (on computer disc) must be submitted by July 31 to First Night Youngstown, 25 E. Boardman St., Suite 405, Youngstown, OH 44503.
