YSU women golfers place 12th at OSU

The Youngstown State women’s golf team had a strong performance during Sunday’s final round at the Lady Buckeye Spring Invitational at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course.

The Penguins carded a 329 after rounds of 344 and 350 on Saturday. They finished with 1,023 for 54 holes to place 12th in a strong field that featured nine Big Ten schools. Michigan State rallied past Purdue to win the team title.

YSU’s Allison Mitzel shot a 77, finishing 63rd with a three-round score of 253. Sarah Heimlich had the Penguins’ best score of the first round with an 84. Heimlich finished 67th with a 259. In the second round on Saturday, Aislynn Merling and Emily Rohanna each finished with an 86. Merling had an 83 to finish with a 255 for the event and finish 65th.

The Penguins return to action at the Horizon League Championships in Florida which start on Thursday at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Holub ties for 4th

University Park, Pa.

Youngstown State golfer D.J. Holub tied for fourth at the 37th annual Rutherford Intercollegiate held at the Penn State Blue Course.

Holub had rounds of 76 and 73 on Saturday and finished with a low of 72 to tie two others. Xavier’s Tanapol Vattanapisit won in a playoff following a three-round total of 216.

YSU shot a 306 on Sunday following rounds of 316 and 303 on Saturday for a combined score of 925, tying Rutgers for 11th place at the 14-team tournament. Binghamton won the team crown with an 890, five shots ahead of Xavier.

Bill Gaffney also had his best round of the event on Sunday firing a 75. Brandon Pluchinsky had an 81 for 238 to finish 59th.

YSU heads to Florida for the Horizon League Championships which start on Thursday. The event is being held at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Harris stops Sherifi with 5th-round TKO

NEW YORK

Youngstown cruiserweight Joshua “The Juice” Harris IV of the Buckeye Elks improved to (9-6-1, 7 KOs) after stopping Albanian fighter Sevdail Sherifi from Switzerland (9-2-2, 8 KOs) Saturday at the Theater in Madison Square Garden.

The bout ended in the fifth round. Sherifi was knocked down in the fourth before being stopped at :19 of the fifth for the TKO.

Harris is trained by Frank West.

Grove City wins PAC tennis crown

ERIE, Pa.

Grove City captured its 23rd consecutive Presidents’ Athletic Conference championship at the Pennbriar Club by slipping past Saint Vincent in the team standings.

Grove City finished the two-day event with 46 points and Saint Vincent had 44.

The Wolverines pulled ahead by winning two of three doubles flights. At second doubles, senior Anthony Rosselli (Poland) and sophomore Colby Beighey downed Saint Vincent’s top-seeded combination of Chris Andrejcik and Tony Costantino in the finals 8-6.

Grove City secured the conference title by winning three of the six singles draws. Rosselli rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 finals win against Saint Vincent’s top-seeded Anthony Nemanic at No. 3 singles.

Serena, Venus lead USA to Fed Cup win

DELRAY BEACH, Fla.

Venus Williams needed eight match points in the final game to beat Johanna Larsson 6-3, 7-5 and give the U.S. an insurmountable 3-1 lead against Sweden in the Fed Cup World Group Playoff.

It marked the first time that the 21st ranked Venus Williams, a former No. 1, has clinched a Fed Cup tie for the U.S. in 10 ties played.

Earlier Sunday, world No. 1 Serena Williams boosted the U.S. to a 2-1 lead when she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over 54th-ranked Sofia Arvidsson.
