For the fifth year, Austintown Fitch High School hosted the Souper Supper March 12 to provide local families in need with food from Aldi’s. This year, the PTA-sponsored event provided 45 Austintown families with $75 gift vouchers.

PTA members were in charge or food, decorations, entertainment, raffle table, reservations and passing out the gift vouchers, while AMS students provided entertainment, with the help from teachers Bill Klein and Marc Pupino.

Students from the high school’s National Honor Society and student council volunteered to set up, work the dinner and clean up. Beth Heinz helped prepare the food.

Patrons of the event were given a light meal of a bowl of soup, roll, dessert and beverage. The lightness of the meal was symbolic of the many families that do not get enough to eat.

The soup was served in a clay bowl, made by members of the art department, Diane Devine, Jim Sulik and Patti Prentiss, with help from Natalie Winkle, Lynn Lovett, and Karen Weinberg, who glazed 300 bowls. Patrons kept the bowl as a keepsake of the event.

“My hope is that each year this event will grow bigger and we’ll get more students involved,” said this year’s chairperson, Kelly Phillips.
