Boys track starts outdoor season

The Boardman boys track team opened the outdoor season with an 83-54 loss to the GlenOak Golden Eagles last week.

The Spartans scored in the 4x800 relay with the team of junior Mark Hadley, junior Alan Burns, senior Sam Sheronovich and freshman Nathan Hadley in a time of 8:27. In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Will Birchfield and junior Jeff Bean placed second and third, respectively, with times of 15.83 and 16.44. In the 100-meter dash, senior Nathan Jones placed first overall with a time of 11.27 and junior Isaiah Lyle was third at 11.74.

“We really got off to a great start — our 4x800 and 100 guys really ran well,” said head coach John Phillips.

In the 1600-meter run, Mark Hadley cruised to a first-place finish in a time of 4:24 and brother Nathan Hadley was third at 4:33. The Spartans won the 4x100-meter relay with the team of junior Turel Thompson, Lyle, junior Brian Bodrick and Jones in a time of 43.5.

In the 300-meter hurdles, Birchfield placed third in 43.76. Sophomore Josh Suarez was third in the 400 in a time of 54.93. Nathan Hadley placed first in the 800 in a time of 2:03. In the 200-meter dash, Jones took first in 22.82 and Bodrick was third at 23.09. While in the 3200-meter run, Mark Hadley finished first with a time of 9:25, setting a new GlenOak stadium record.

In the field events, senior Chris Riwniak won the shot put with a throw of 51 feet. Junior Mike Sferra placed second in the discus with a throw of 134-4. In the high jump, Bean finished third with a leap of 5-8. Junior Steve Brown was third in the pole vault with a mark of 10-6.

The first two BW-3 Track MVPs are Sferra for his effort at last week’s Dover Relays and Nathan Hadley for his effort at GlenOak.
