1962: The musical “My Fair Lady” closes on Broadway after 2,717 performances.
1978: Pope John Paul I is found dead in his Vatican apartment just over a month after becoming head of the Roman Catholic Church.
1982: Extra-Strength Tylenol capsules laced with cyanide claim the first of seven victims in the Chicago area. (To date, the case remains unsolved.)

1987: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development approves a $900,000 grant to establish a new electronics firm, Sovereign Circuits, at Youngstown Commerce Park.
The Youngstown Board of Education approves a budget of $69.8 million for the 1987-88 school year.
Nearly 100 students and parents picket at Youngstown State University, the site of negotiations between board of education negotiators and the teachers who have been on strike since Sept. 10.
1972: Youngstown’s crime rate for the first six months of 1972 is reported down by 10.5 percent although there were eight homicides compared to seven for the same period in 1971.
Combatting increasing pollution of the Meander Reservoir drives the cost of treating water for the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District to its highest level in 40 years.
Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter calls a meeting of Mahoning and Trumbull County officials to discuss enforcement of Sunday closing laws, which have become bogged down in a “legal quagmire.”
Following a tip from an unidentified woman, New Castle police confiscate five vials of liquid LSD valued at $300,000. Police watch the unattended package in a clump of weeds for three hours waiting for someone to pick it up, but two men in a car apparently spotted them and fled.
1962: Halfback “Bo” Rein 5-11, 175-pound Niles McKinley senior, is the ground-gaining and scoring leader on Tony Mason’s Red Dragons this season.
Nine fire companies battle a fire that destroyed a Hillman Street warehouse owned by the Automatic Canteen Co. Alfred Lang, owner of the company, said cigarette, gum, candy and coffee store there were valued at $20,000.
State examiners say unauthorized personnel were paid $14,400 by the Youngstown Water Department during the administration of former Mayor Frank R. Franko, although they couldn’t prove that the workers did campaign work for Franko on city time.
1937: Delbert Dales, 15, of Gustavus, riding home from school on his bicycle, is killed instantly when he passes a stopped school bus and is struck by the fire extinguisher on a truck headed the other way in Route 90. His death is Trumbull County’s 42nd traffic fatality of the year.
Dr. William Herbert Hudnut of North Creek, N.Y., former pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Youngstown, will marry Mrs. Paul Hudnut of Northampton, Mass., in New York. Mrs. Hudnut is the widow of Dr. Hudnut’s brother.
