First-grade students at Woodside Elementary School showed off just how much they loved to read during “Grand Buddies” Sept. 20.
“It’s just a day to honor our grandparents and grand buddies, who are special to us because Grandparent’s Day is in September. School tends to be a time for kids and it’s good to bring in parents and grandparents here to let them know that their students are getting support here in school and the students are proud,” said first-grade teacher Megan Monaco.
“We focused on the book ”If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” We really enjoyed the silliness of it and it’s a time to show off what they’ve learned so far. We practice readers theater and they have a script and we also did a lot of music and they’re quick learners.”
Grandparents crowded first-grade classes with their grandchildren as students enjoyed reading activities and games inspired the book. Some classes made cookie graphs, while others performed theatrical plays, reading excerpts of the book. While children laughed and enjoyed themselves, their grandparents also had just as much fun.
Mike Byus was pleased with the outcome of the event and was just happy to spend quality time with his grandson Andrew Musch.
“It feels excellent to be here with him. The more I’m involved and be there, the better. It’s a great idea,” said Byus.
