Varsity soccer beats Fitch

The Poland varsity girls soccer team defeated Austintown 1-0 on Monday, The goal was scored by Shannon Miller. Poland attempted 13 total shots, eight of which were corner kicks. Poland goalkeeper Jessica Rutana blocked all six Fitch shots. The junior varsity team lost to Austintown 1-0.

The Blue Rocks saw Alexis “Jay Jay” Capan score two goals for her team, while Libby Hartzell was all over the field and earned MVP of the week. Allyson “Alley” Nittoli was named MVP of the Silver Bullets for the week and Hannah Volpini scored a goal. Allyson “Aly” Andrews, Camryn Latenzio and Madison Wess all scored goals for The Coffee Crushers team. Alycia Rowe came in as Most Valuable Player of the week.

Cailey Barnhart, Marlie Kluchar and Emma Moffo all had goals for the Thunder Ducks. Cara Maze and Emily Gerak were both named Most Valuable Players of the week. The Blue Thundercatz saw Addie Quattro score a goal and Rachel Boano came in as MVP for her team. The lady Gray Hounds got a goal from Emily Galtenio, while Mallery Walmer was Most Valuable Player of the week.

The Gold Fire watched Aiden Hryb and Ben Kauffman both score goals and Elias Diamandis earned Most Valuable Player this week. Andrew Armile, Ben Dearing, Kevin Kushner and Joseph Zahran all had goals this week for the White Phantoms. Joseph Sahrid was named Most Valuable Player.

The Yellow Jackets named Noah Lee and Anthony Depascale Most Valuable Players of the week. Mark Pompeo played well as a first-time goalie.

Finally, Michael Peretti and Andrew Slaven both brought in goals for the Tigers and Andrew Slaven earned Most Valuable Player of the week.

Boys golf defeats to Austintown

The Poland boys golf team beat Austintown 162-171 on Sept. 20 at the Deer Creek golf course. Leading the team were Mark Passarello (36), Jason McQuown (37), Dave Shoffstall (42) and Nick Franceshelli (47).

Poland boys soccer has new coach

Poland boys soccer team is now under the direction of Coach Brian Garcar, who had previously held the position as varsity assistant coach, and junior varsity head coach and has recently been promoted to head coach of the program. Garcar is a graduate of Poland Seminary High School where he also played soccer. He recently graduated from Youngstown State University, and has obtained a teaching position at Struthers Local Schools in the math department.

Poland defeats Austintown

The Poland volleyball team defeated Austintown 25-18, 20-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-11 on Sept. 18. The leading server was Allison Berend with a total of 12 points and two aces. The leading attacker was Aleah Hughes with 15 kills. Leading setter, Mirhanda Henneman, had 20 assists. Bailey Bury was the leading defender with 27 digs. Leading Blocker, Arlia Duarte had eight blocks.

Gardner takes second at tourney

Poland’s Garrett Gardner played in a big Level 5 USTA tournament recenrly in Dayton and took second place. He went 4-1, beating two players from the Cleveland area (Anzalone and Stroup), then lost in the finals to nationally-ranked DJ Thomas from Canal Winchester, Ohio, 6-3, 6-3.

Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic

Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, has started. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.

These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield.
