New business helps college students

Former MCCTC engineering instructor Bob Dukish has opened a new business in Canfield, Help Buzzer, which helps students gain real-world experience while offsetting some of the costs of college. For more information, visit www.helpbuzzer.com or email bob@dukish.com.

Teen driving survival school set

On Oct. 13, at the Value City Department Store parking lot in Boardman, the Sports Car Club of America will sponsor a Tire Rack Street Survival teen-driving school. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of American youths aged 16 to 19. Tire Rack Street Survival program is a national driver education program that teaches teens the skills they need to stay alive behind the wheel. Students use their own vehicles so that the skills they learn can be directly translated to their own daily driving experiences.

The Tire Rack Street Survival Æ program is open to permitted and licensed drivers ages 16-21. Registration forms can be found online at www.streetsurvival.org. The cost is $75 per student and some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates. Space is limited and registration is required.

Pink Ribbon Tea planned Oct. 1

The Junior League of Youngstown will honor breast cancer survivors of the Mahoning Valley for the 18th year at its Pink Ribbon Tea at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Georgetown Banquet Center, 5945 South Ave.

Brenda Rider,a breast cancer survivor and founder of A Way With Words Foundation, will speak. A Way With Words is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to anyone who has been touched by cancer. Rider also has formed the R.O.C.C.K. Children’s Choir, who will perform at the tea. Public labyrinth walk is Oct. 21

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will offer the final guided walk of the season on Oct. 21 from 2-3 p.m. and celebrate the Journey of Autumn and marking the Feast of St. Ursula, for whom the Ursuline Sisters are named. Anyone wishing to walk the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the official walks can come anytime at their own convenience.

There are guides provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to walk a labyrinth. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need.

The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the Labyrinth, which is handicapped-accessible and offers ample parking.

Baby Talk: where babies communicate

Baby Talk, a small organization founded by a teacher of the deaf and a speech therapist Barbara Ricks and Karern Steed, is now offering sign language classes for parents and their children ages 6 months to 2 1/2 years. Classes will be every Friday and Saturday from Sept. 28 to Oct. 20 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Classes will be at Beyond Expectations at 725 Boardman Canfield Road in Boardman.

Prescription medication discussion

Pembrooke Place will be hosting a panel discussion on Oct. 3 about help covering the costs of prescription medications.

The panel will consist of representatives from The Prescription Drug Assistance program in Youngstown, The Social Security Office, and Anthem Insurance. This panel discussion is free and open to the public. RSVP to the Pembrooke Place Skilled Nursing Center at 330-788-3038 by Oct. 1.

St. Michael’s hosts dinner and auction

There will be a dinner and auction today at St. Michael’s Parish Hall which will include a 2006 Jeep Liberty 4x4, a 1998 Mercedes Benz SL500, jewelry, Cleveland Browns tickets, gift baskets, a hot air balloon ride, a home security system, and more.

Lego my library

Kids, age 6 and up, will meet at the Canfield library on Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. to enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided.

Local church to host chicken dinner

The Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield, will host its drive-through chicken dinner on Thursday from 4 p.m. until sold out. Entrees include stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and brownie. The cost is $7 per plate.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Oct. 8 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s

Join the library for developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on Wednesday, as well as Oct. 17 and 31 at 10 a.m. Costumes may be work to the event on Halloween.

Fun with letters for 2’s and 3’s

An hour of talking, singing, reading, writing and playing with letters for parents/caregivers and children ages 2-3 will be available at the library on Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. In addition to reading ABC books, play with tactile, magnetic, and foam letters. Children will also make letters with play dough, cookie cutters, stampers and more. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

The Keelings in concert on Sept. 30

The Keelings will be in concert on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. at Western Reserve United Methodist Church. The Keelings are best known for their unique harmony, trumpet trios, and piano playing. The community is invited to attend. The church is located at 4580 Canfield Road, Canfield. A free-will offering will be taken.

Fun time for 4’s and 5’s

The Canfield library will host developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader every Tuesday in October at 1:30 p.m. Costumes may be worn to the event on Oct. 30. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Disney’s “Phineas and Ferb: The Best Live Tour Ever”

Enter a contest during regular business hours at any library in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system to win four tickets for the Oct. 27 performance at the Covelli Centre at 1 or 3 p.m. Contest runs through Oct. 13. Entries available at all PLYMC libraries. To enter, fill out an entry form and write a paragraph on why you like Phineas and Ferb. Drawings will take place Oct. 15 at each branch and the library will notify winners.

Gotta move story time

The Canfield library will be hosting a fun and interactive story time for children who cannot sit still for long on Thursday at 10 a.m. They will be able to dance and wiggle during an active story time for the young and restless. For ages 2-5. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales to tails at library

Sign up at the Canfield library to read to a registered therapy dog at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence, and encourages a love of reading. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9 for Compassion, registered Delta society therapy dogs. Sign-up is required. The grossest thing I ever read

Share your favorite loathsome literary moment from any book you’ve read by filling out our entry form at any library branch during regular hours or online at www.libraryvisit.org/teens. The Teen Advisory Board will select the grossest of the gross entries and the winners will receive autographed copies of ”The Monstrumologist” by Rick Yancey. For teens in grades 7-12.

Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest 2012

Danielle Scott was a beloved Teen Advisory Board member who was lost to cancer. To honor Danielle, the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is sponsoring the fourth annual Danielle Scott Memorial Poetry Contest.

This year, to correspond with Teen Read Week, author Rick Yancey and his Monstrumologist series and in keeping with the 2012 Teen Read week theme of “It Came From the Library”, poems entered should have a horror-related theme: monsters, the supernatural, the gothic and so on. Entries may be submitted online at www.teenxtremeonline.org/submityourwork.cfm or on standard 8 Ω” x 11” paper (not to exceed two pages) to any public library in Mahoning County by Oct. 31. If you submit your entry online, select the writing type “Poem” and be sure to include a phone number. Hard copies must be typed and be sure to include your name, telephone number, grade and school on your entry. Entries are not returnable. One winner will be chosen and will be awarded a plaque and a monetary prize. Eligibility: All entrants must be in grades 7-12 and either live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Free ACT/SAT math help

The Canfield library is hosting a free ACT/SAT math review program on Oct. 15 and 23 at 6:30 p.m. A YSU mathematics professor will review some test material and answer your tough math questions. Space is limited so sign-up is required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Canfield library.

Teen choice awards set

The library will be hosting its own teen choice awards where teens in grades 7-12 can vote on who’s the hottest singer, what stars shouldn’t be famous, what piece of tech accessory you can’t live without, and more during regular hours throughout the month of October. They will post the results in November. A lucky random participant will receive a prize.

The Canfield library will be hosting an informational session where you can learn about downloading library eBooks to your Apple device, iPad, iPod, and iPhone, and how to use our digital catalog on Oct. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Space is very limited and sign-up is required. Bring any coupons you don’t need to the Canfield library at 10 a.m. on Oct. 13 to stretch your shopping dollars by swapping coupons or learning new tips from other coupon-clippers.

The Canfield library will be hosting a blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association on Oct. 16 from 1-3 p.m.

Fall lecture series at the Canfield Historical Society

The Canfield Historical Society will be hosting a fall lecture series at the Bond House, located at 44 W. Main St, Canfield, across from the Canfield library. Lectures are free and open to the public. No pre-registration is necessary. Lectures are appropriate for all ages.

Upcoming lectures in the series are “History of Ohio Quilting” by Clare Neff and Betty Aberson on Oct. 11 and “Select Pieces from the Canfield Historical Society Collection” by Canfield High School Curator Laura Zeh on Nov. 8.

Fall events at White House Fruit Farm

Special fall outdoor events continue every weekend through Oct. 21 at the White House Fruit Farm in Canfield. Fall hours for the market are Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday noon–5 p.m. White House Fruit Farm is located 10 minutes south of Canfield on Route 62. Girl Scouts to host open house

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio will host an open house at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Canfield United Methodist Church. Attendees will meet other adults and girls in the community running troops. Adults may volunteer to be a group leader. Registration and volunteer applications will be available at the open house. The cost is $12 a year to become a member of the organization. Monstrous art contest to be hosted

First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16. To coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County.

Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork.

Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award.

Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Women’s book discussion club to meet

The Canfield women’s book discussion group will meet every third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. If you are interested in joining a book club or attending a Conversation Salon, contact the Development Office at 330-740-6086 for more information.

Libraries to have Sunday hours

Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.

Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
