The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted its fourth annual Canfield Cardinal Classic soccer tournament on July 14 with 48 teams entered in the all-day event. Five fields were in simultaneous use, all located on the high school grounds, with each team playing three games.

Teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania participated in the event and included Canfield, Boardman, Alliance, Stow, Strongsville, Crestwood, West Branch, St. Peter Chanel, Howland, Marlington, Warren Harding, Victors, Lakeview, Chippewa, Northwestern, Eagles, Salem, Tri Valley, Crestview, JFK, Springfield, Mooney, St. Joseph Academy, Struthers, Austintown Fitch, Northwest, James A. Garfield, Badger, East Liverpool, and Niles. Many of the schools had multiple teams for both the boys and girls.

The tournament is the main fundraiser for the Canfield High School boys and girls soccer program, and was organized by the parent members of the Canfield Soccer Boosters. Proceeds from the tournament are used to buy new uniforms, fund scholarships for players and entrance fees for tournaments.

The goal of the tournament was to give the coaches a chance to view the players in preseason and to prepare for the fall season. Coaches used this opportunity to see the players with the ball and to learn what the team needs to work on for the upcoming season. It also gave the coaches a chance to watch the players and get a sense of which players to select for the junior varsity and varsity teams.

The tournament also had community support and corporate sponsors, including Max-Freeze, Komara Jewelers, Comprehensive Logistics, R & J Trucking, Team Office Technologies, Eagle Rental/Purchase, Mill Creek Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, Bodine-Perry, McCamon-Hunt Insurance Agency, KRK Associates, Title Works Agency, Avon Oaks Ballroom, Atway & Cochran Attorneys and Counselors at Law, All Ohio Title & Escrow, Tri County Sports Complex, Petrallo Chiropractic, Dr. Raymond Duffet Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mark J. Squicquero D.D.S., Huntington Bank, Massage Caf and Valley Home Health Care.

This year, a Canfield soccer team alumni game was held at the end of the tournament, with 30 players returning to the field to play once again. Included on the roster was Canfield High School boys and girls head soccer coach Phil Simone, himself a Canfield alumni.
