3 companies seek pact for traffic cameras
YOUNGSTOWN
City officials received proposals from three companies to install traffic cameras to fine those who violate vehicular laws in school zones.
City council’s safety committee heard from police Chief Rod Foley and Deputy Law Director Anthony Donofrio, deputy law director, Thursday about possibly getting cameras, something discussed by city officials for three years.
The companies that submitted proposals to install and monitor the cameras are: Redflex Traffic Systems of Phoenix, American Traffic Solutions of Tempe, Ariz., and B&W Sensors LLC of St. Louis.
Safety-committee members plan to invite representatives from the three companies to a meeting in the next 30 days to discuss the proposals.
Some time after that, city officials would select a company.
Each proposal provides various options for city officials, Foley and Donofrio said.
There is no cost to the city to have the traffic cameras installed and monitored by any of the three companies, they said. The company selected would keep a portion of the money charged to those who are caught on camera breaking traffic laws as its fee.
Those caught on camera would not be charged with a moving violation or have points added to their driving records, city officials said.
The department would need to have at least one officer review the tapes of those caught, which would be time-consuming, Foley said.
