Dog treats, nut butters sold at Target, Trader Joe’s recalled

Akron Beacon Journal

Private-label peanut butter and almond butter sold at Target, Trader Joe’s and Heinen’s stores, and dog treats sold at Target are being recalled due to potential salmonella contamination.

The nut butters were manufactured by Sunland Inc. of Portales, N.M., which is recalling more than 70 products it made between May 1 and Monday.

The products have been linked to a multistate outbreak of salmonella infections that has made 30 people in 19 states ill between June 11 and Sept. 2, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. No cases have been reported in Ohio.

Sunland, which made the butters, issued its recall Monday, expanding it to include dozens of products beyond what it made for Trader Joe’s, including the Heinen’s products.

The recall affects:

16-ounce jars of Heinen’s All Natural Peanut Butter, Creamy and Crunchy, with UPC codes of 2060140048 and 2060140047; and Heinen’s Organic Peanut Butter, Creamy and Crunchy with UPC codes of 2060140046 and 2060140045.

16-ounce jars of Archer Farms Creamy Almond Butter (UPC code 8523902334) and Archer Farms Peanut Butter with Flax Seeds (UPC code 8523902333) sold at Target stores, and Trader Joe’s Valencia Peanut Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, Crunchy and Salted (UPC code 00989275) and Trader Joe’s Almond Butter with Roasted Flaxseeds, Crunchy & Salted (UPC code 00940795).

Boots & Barkley six count, 5-inch American Beef Bully Sticks for dogs, manufactured by Kasel Associated Industries of Denver and sold nationwide at Target between April and September. The sticks were sold in a clear plastic bag marked with bar code number 647263899189. They could be harmful to pets who eat them and to humans who handle them.

Kasel Industries is recalling all lot numbers, including those stamped with the following: BESTBY20APR2014DEN, BESTBY01JUN2014DEN, BESTBY23JUN2014DEN and BESTBY23SEP2014DEN. Customers are asked to return the sticks to the place of purchase for a full refund.
