Dominion East Ohio has announced its 18th annual Community Impact Awards competition, which makes $100,000 available to nonprofits that have made a difference in the areas that Dominion serves.

The award recognizes cities and community organizations that have made major contributions toward the economic and social revitalization of communities throughout Northeast Ohio, including the Mahoning Valley.

To compete for funds, projects must have been completed between July 2011 and November 2012 and organizations must be classified as a nonprofit. The entry deadline is Nov. 30. For information, visit www.dom.com, and search keyword “impact.”

Brews’ market grows

The Rust Belt Brewing Co., headquartered in Youngstown, recently penetrated markets in central Ohio.

Since the company debuted in 2008, it has experienced a sharp spike in sales. In July, Rust Belt hired a contract brewer in Pennsylvania to aid in its expansion efforts across markets in that state and Ohio.

The company also still brews its craft and session beers at the historic B&O train station on Mahoning Avenue. or the first time, consumers in Columbus will be able to buy Rust Belt favorites such as Coke Oven Stout, Blast Furnace Blond Ale and Old Man Hopper’s IPA, along with others.

Giant Eagle and Kroger stores, among others, will stock the beer.

Permits for drilling

Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Oil and Gas Resources Management has issued 375 permits for Utica shale drilling in eastern Ohio since the week of Sept. 9, according to an update provided by the agency.

A total of 134 Utica wells have been drilled statewide since 2009, with 31 wells producing. Agency figures show Carroll County leads Ohio in permitting with 139 issued. ODNR also reports that Ohio has approved 16 Marcellus shale drilling permits, of which seven wells have been drilled.

New eatery in Niles

A new restaurant at 41 S. Main St., site of the former Kuszmaul Pharmacy, has opened.

The Stone Yard Grill & Tavern features wings, burgers and sandwiches and a wide selection of steaks and other dinners. The restaurant will open daily at 11 a.m. for lunch and dinner service.

Nut-butter recall

A New Mexico-based company is recalling 76 types of peanut butter and almond butter after one of its products was linked to a salmonella outbreak at Trader Joe’s groceries.

Sunland Inc. recalled the products under multiple brand names after the Food and Drug Administration and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states to Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter.
