We continue with a deal from the recent ACBL Summer North American Championships played in Philadelphia. This one is from the final of the von Zedtwitz Life Master Pairs.

Playing four-card majors West, Marc Zwerling of Portland, Ore., decided that, if his suit was good enough to bid, it was good enough to lead. Declarer captured East’s jack with the king and shifted to the ace of hearts, West following smoothly with the king!

The heart suit no longer looked all that promising, so declarer shifted to the ace of clubs and another, taken by West with the king. Back came a low heart. Declarer rose with the king and cashed all his minor suit winners (West unblocking the queen) and then tried for an endplay by ducking a spade! The operation was successful but the patient died. The defenders took the last four tricks — two spades, a heart and a diamond!
