YSU vs. UNI More from Stambaugh Stadium

Great start: Not only did Youngstown State snap an 11-game losing streak to UNI, the Penguins got off to their first 4-0 start since 2000. That was also the last year the Penguins defeated the Panthers. This is the eighth time YSU has started a season 4-0.

Good crowd: The announced crowd of 19,277 was the ninth-largest in Stambaugh Stadium history and it might have been even larger had Youngstown not been hit with a downpour 90 minutes before the game started, which caused the start of the game to be delayed 40 minutes. The largest crowd in Stambaugh history was 21,119 for the 2000 game against Northern Iowa. Saturday’s crowd was the biggest of the Eric Wolford era and the biggest since 2006. It was also the 200th game in Stambaugh Stadium history.

Conference openers: The Penguins are 13-3 in Missouri Valley Football Conference openers since joining the league in 1997. That includes a 9-0 mark at Stambaugh Stadium. Saturday’s game marked the first time YSU opened its conference slate with UNI.

Seeing yellow: In addition to the offensive pass interference call to end the game (which was declined, obviously), UNI was hit with nine penalties for 80 yards. YSU was penalized just three times for 32 yards. For any UNI conspiracy theorists out there, here are the names and hometowns of the officials: referee Wally Righton (Darien, Ill.), umpire Scott Jones (St. Louis), head linesman Jim Swider (Downers Grove, Ill.), line judge Jeff Meslow (White Bear Township, Minn.), side judge Steve Thielen (Eagan, Minn.), field judge Jason Frank (Mondovi, Wis.) and back judge Rick Fahnestock (Cuba, Ill.).
