NEWTON FALLS

Excessive speed and possible drug and alcohol abuse contributed to a two-car, head-on collision Friday that killed a Newton Falls couple, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Jamie T. Danes, 37, who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, and his wife, Emily M., 29, a passenger in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene. Neither was wearing a seat belt, according to the OSHP report.

The Daneses were southbound on South Canal Street in Newton Township when a northbound 1997 Cadillac driven by Paul J. Wodianka, 42, of Diamond, at a high rate of speed, went left of center, striking the Daneses’ vehicle head-on. After impact, Wodianka’s vehicle came to rest off the west side of the road, and the Daneses’ vehicle went off the east side of the road.

Wodianka was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, the patrol said. The hospital reported him in stable condition Saturday night.

No charges had been filed as of Saturday night. Troopers from the OSHP Warren Post are waiting for the results of a toxicology test to determine if Wodianka was under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash.

The Daneses are the 24th and 25th people killed on Trumbull County roads in 2012, said Lt. Brian Holt, commander of the Warren Post.
