Musical at YSU to mark MathFest’s 10th year

Youngstown State University will mark the 10th anniversary of MathFest, a day of mathematical workshops and contests for area high school students, with “Calculus: The Musical.”

The show, presented by Matheater, will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center at YSU.

YSU College of STEM and Department of Mathematics and Statistics host MathFest each year where about 400 high school students and their teachers spend the day learning and experiencing mathematics.

The event is coordinated by Angela Spalsbury, a YSU associate professor of mathematics and statistics.

The event is free and open to the public.

“Calculus: The Musical” is a humorous view of the development of calculus through song.

BCCC foundation announces $10K gift

The Butler County Community College Education Foundation, Inc., announced a $10,000 gift from Northwest Savings Bank to support high school programming initiatives.

The gift, made through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit, will assist students who want to earn college credits through BC3 during their junior or senior years in high school.

Chris Martin, president, Southwest Region; Ben Jamieson, senior vice president; and Jeannie Gilkey, manager of Northwest Savings Bank, presented a check to the foundation at a meeting earlier this month.

More than 600 students at high schools throughout the area participate in college with the high school program every year.

Author will present lecture at Mount Union

Caroline Lawrence, author of the Roman Mysteries series, will present the Slater Lecture at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

Lawrence’s presentation is titled, “The Historical Detective.”

Lawrence grew up in Bakersfield, Calif., and her ancestors included pioneers, Teamsters, newspapermen and Mormons.

She was a schoolteacher for 10 years in London, England, before she started writing history mystery stories for kids in 2001.

To date, there are about 20 books included in her Roman Mysteries series.

Recently, Lawrence launched another series of books about a 12-year-old detective, P.K. Pinkerton, Private Eye, set in Virginia City, Nev., in 1862.

A book signing will take place after the lecture in the lobby of Presser Hall.

The event is free and open to the public.

Presser Recital Hall is within Cope Music Hall, on the corner of Union Avenue and Simpson Street, across from the Campus Lakes.

Ohio PTA is looking for workshop presenters

Ohio PTA is seeking workshop presenters for its 107th Annual Convention and Leadership Conference, which will take place from April 19-21 at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Presenters are needed in the areas of child safety, health and wellness, advocacy, education, diversity and inclusion and leadership development.

Workshop sessions are 90 minutes long.

Proposals should include the name of the category the presentation fits in, handouts or a description of handouts, a 75-word precise description of the presentation vitae of the presenter and three specific ways participants may use the information with their PTA units.
