The National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute will open its doors downtown Thursday with a ribbon-cutting to take place at 3 p.m. at 236 W. Boardman St.

The advanced- manufacturing hub, opening at the Youngstown Business Incubator’s annex, will be a point of research and development for more than 65 universities, private companies and nonprofit organizations looking to make advances in the additive- manufacturing industry.

The technology uses 3D-imaging software to print products layer by layer.

Thursday’s event will be proof of the federal government’s $70 million investment in the consortium and research facility.

The government will provide 60 percent of a $30 million reward by year’s end with the rest coming over the next two years. The remaining $40 million will be provided by consortium partners.
