Boardman Glenwood cross country excels
BGMS’s cross country team competed in the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 15. The team’s top four scorers, including, Cassie Stitt, Casey Zaitzew, Savannah Beule and Lauren Pavlansky, finished in the top 65 out of more than 200 runners. Allison Janak, Kayla Welton and Rebekah Stamp supported the team with personal records on the course.
Nathaniel Ams had a strong individual effort, finishing 14th out of 234 boys. Matt Maroni, Mark Moradian, Chris Peters, Austin Bacho and Nick Peters also had personal records.
Boys soccer teams beat Ursuline
Boardman’s varsity and junior varsity boys soccer teams evened their season records at 3-3-2 after defeating the visiting Ursuline Irish on Sept. 13. Junior Luke Marsco registered all the scoring in the 3-0 win. Two goals were unassisted, while Marsco’s first was off a feed from junior Fabio Bassil. Senior Anthony Calautti had four saves as goalie.
In the JV match, many Spartans found their way into the scorebook in the 10-0 win. Zach Fryda, Nick Mancini, Cameron Missos, and Anthony Pallante each scored two goals, while Ray Peters and Zach Smotzer had one each. Assists were granted to Fryda, Missos and Pallante, as well as Kyle Kondas, Vince Mancini and Dylan Ball. Brian Fryda had two saves in the goal.
Boardman Glenwood volleyball defeats Girard
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team defeated Girard 25-17 and 25-7 to improve to 3-5 on the season. The leading scorer was Zoe Sims, with floor leaders being Sydney Hull and Emma Hough. The eighth-grade team fell to Girard 25-9 and 25-18 to make its record 2-6. Floor leaders were Alaina Hufnagel and Brittany Mathews.
Spartans golf loses to Fitch
The Boardman boys golf team was defeated by Austintown 165-167 on Sept. 13 at the Deer Creek golf course. Leading the team were Darian Wilson (39), Brad Dofka (41), John Diamond (42) and Greg Thomas (45).
Boardman Glenwood tops Howland
Boardman Glenwood Middle School’s seventh-grade volleyball team beat Howland 15-25, 25-16 and 25-14. Toni Dota had three aces and Madison Soles and Marissa Sudac had one each. The eighth-grade team fell to Howland 25-15, 20-25 and 25-17. Faith Clear had five aces with Taylor Halowell leading the defense.
Match against Lakeview rescheduled
The Boardman boys soccer game against undefeated Lakeview on Sept. 6 was suspended with the Bulldogs holding a 2-0 lead near the end of the first half.
The game will resume Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
Youngstown Orthopaedic Saturday sports clinic
Youngstown Orthopaedic Associates’ Saturday sports clinics, geared specifically to fall sports student-athletes in need of immediate attention to sports injuries, is running. The clinics run from 9-11 a.m. every Saturday throughout the high school sports season.
These clinics are open to players involved in football, volleyball, soccer, golf and other high school and college sports. They are held at the practice’s Building A at the northwest corner of Tippecanoe Road and Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. More information is available at www.youngstownortho.com.
