Boardman Rotary sponsors festival
The Boardman Rotary Club will sponsor the annual “Oktoberfestival” Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. in Boardman Park. The “Oktoberfestival” will feature more than 100 arts and crafts vendors, as well as “fair food” and local non-profit display booths.
Parking is offered on-site. Entrance into the park is $3 per person. Children under 12 are admitted free.
All proceeds from the event will benefit community projects and charitable organizations in the Mahoning Valley.
Rivers Casino bus trip
Team Schein is hosting a bus trip to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh on Oct. 26. All seats are non-refundable and all proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society Boardman Relay for Life on behalf of Team Schein.
The group will be departing from 760 Boardman Canfield Road, Boardman, at 5 p.m. and will return to the same location at approximately 12:30 a.m. The cost is $30 per person and this includes $20 in free coin play.

Bike smart at Mill Creek
Mill Creek MetroParks will be hosting the Bike Smart program, instructed by Mill Creek MetroParks Police Bike Patrol Officer Christian Hunter and Recreation Program Coordinator Angela McGrady. The program will take place today from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. There will be bike riding lessons, a 10-mile bike ride, free gifts and more. Bring a bike, helmet, and packed lunch. There is a $2 fee for Mahoning County residents and a $3 fee for non-residents. Call 330-740-7106 to register.
School of nursing to host annual alumni luncheon
The 25th annual alumni luncheon for the Trumbull Memorial Hospital School of Nursing will be held on Oct. 6 at The Center at Brittany Place, 336 Vienna Ave (Route 46), Niles.
Tales and talk for 2’s and 3’s
The Boardman library will be reading developmentally-appropriate books, singing songs and rhymes, finger plays and offering other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader every Wednesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Fun time for 4’s and 5’s
There will be developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 4-5) become a successful reader at the Boardman library every Tuesday in September at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Libraries to have Sunday hours
Austintown, Boardman, and Poland libraries are now open from 1-5 p.m. on Sundays.
Shops 20th anniversary celebration
The Shops at Boardman Park’s 20th anniversary celebration will be today from 6:30-10:30 p.m. The Shops Party Tents will be located behind Quaker Steak and Lube on state Route 224. The evening will include a car/bike cruise at 6 p.m., The Houseband performing at 7:30 p.m., Jeff Kelly from WBBG 106.1 as emcee and Fireworks by BJ Alan at 9:45 p.m.
Make and play-it tween tournament
Make a yarn yo-yo and a ladder golf game at the Boardman library on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and challenge your friends. This one-hour program is open to students in grades 4-6 and they will “Crown a Champion.”
Martino motorsports at the Boardman Library
Drivers Tom and Ryan Martino will have a special story time presentation at the Boardman library on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. They will sign autographs and read to the children. You can also check out their race car dragster in the parking lot.
Monstrous art contest to be hosted
First read the book, then bring it to life in art. “The Monstrumologist” author Rick Yancey will be coming to the main library on Oct. 16 and to coincide with his visit, for the 2012 art contest, you can illustrate your favorite character or scene from any of the Monstrumologist books. Any visual medium is welcome. You can submit your drawing, painting, sketch, photograph, computer-generated art, etc. on paper no larger than 11-by-17, to any library in Mahoning County. Be sure to put your name, telephone number and grade on the back of your artwork. Entries will be judged in two groups (grades 7-9 and grades 10-12) and prizes will be awarded to one winner and one runner-up from each group. Prizes include dinner with the author, a signed copy of “The Monstrumologist” and a monetary award. Entries must be received by no later than Oct. 6. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 who live in or attend school in Mahoning County.

Bring your Nook to the Boardman library on Tuesday at 2 p.m. and the librarians will show you how to download eBooks from the library’s digital catalog. Space is limited so sign-up required. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Boardman library.
Local doctor offers free health lectures
Dr. Kathleen Padgitt, local kidney specialist, is presenting a series of lectures on healthy living. The program will be held at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center’s Azalea Room.
