Warren YWCA plans farewell for pools

Staff report

WARREN

The public is invited to reminisce at a farewell party for the Wean and Edwards pools at the YWCA of Warren at a Farewell to the Pool Party from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 4.

The YWCA encourages everyone to bring memorabilia and pictures to share. Items also may be donated for a memorial collage and time capsule. Refreshments will be served, and tours will be offered. An auction will begin at 6 p.m.

“The needs of our community have changed over the years, and the YWCA of Warren is dedicated to meeting those needs that are in line with our mission of empowering women and eliminating racism,” said Shari Harrell, executive director.

As a result, the YWCA of Warren board of trustees decided to use the pool and locker spaces for other things.

Community leaders have consistently stressed that a primary need in Warren is permanent, supportive housing for women and children and centralized access to other resources.

Working with partner agencies, the YWCA will renovate its 51,000-square- foot facility as a centralized hub to reinvigorate downtown Warren and provide a place for dialogue and education around topics such as teen-dating violence, bullying and human trafficking.

The first phase of renovations will include breaking ground for 12 units of permanent, supportive housing this fall using a $2.1 million grant.

The YWCA is joining with Beatitude House and Coleman Professional Services in the project.
