YOUNGSTOWN

Police are investigating two robberies, a home invasion and an assault in separate occurrences over the weekend.

A 48-year-old city woman told police she and two friends were out paying bills and taking care of other business Saturday afternoon. She said the group stopped at a stop sign on Judson Avenue on the South Side just after 1 p.m. when a man standing near the corner started a conversation with one of the people in the car.

The woman said the man asked to borrow a lighter, and she began to look through her purse for a lighter when the man pulled out a gun and demanded the purse. The thief snatched the bag from the woman’s hands and ran off.

The purse contained $249 and a cellphone.

A 52-year-old Michigan man told police he was assaulted and robbed on the city’s East Side early Sunday.

The man said he was at a gas station in the 1000 block of McGuffey Road when he heard a man shout a profanity at him and begin walking in his direction. He said the man and another man standing nearby began beating him and took his wallet.

The two thieves ran off after stealing the wallet, which contained $500 and assorted credit cards.

Police also are trying to sort out a Sunday evening fight in which a 46-year-old woman said she was punched in the face by an 18-year-old man. The woman’s friend, for whom no age was given, said she also was punched in the chest.

The victim told police the 18-year-old man was arguing with her son in the 800 block of Dewey Avenue on the South Side, and the argument turned physical. She said she was struck by the man during the melee.

The man told police he was swinging his arms and may have accidentally hit the woman.

In a separate matter, an East Side woman told police she was home in her Kendis Circle apartment with the father of her three children Sunday afternoon when the mother of his other child kicked her door in carrying a hammer and attempted to assault her.

The woman said the man involved in the situation forced the hammer-wielding woman out of the house, but the woman then went to the parking lot and used the hammer to break out all the windows on the man’s car.
