Detour on Route 11

Traffic on state Route 11 this week will be detoured during the night for beam-removal work as part of the state Route 344 bridge replacement project, the Ohio Department of Transportation District 11 announced.

From 10 p.m. Wednesday until 6 a.m. Thursday, traffic will be re-routed using the on- and off-ramps at state Route 344. The work also is planned for Monday and next Tuesday during the same time period.

ODOT’s contractor for this $2.36 million project is A.P. O’Horo Company of Liberty.

Football players OK

POLAND

Two high-school football players involved in a Sunday car accident are doing well, the high school principal told the Poland school board Monday.

“I talked to the parents of both and everyone is OK,” said principal Kevin Snyder.

Michael Audi, 16, and Abraham Kassem, 17, were driving north about 12:30 p.m. on Luteran Lane and after stopping at a stop sign, made a left turn onto U.S. Route 224, driving into the path of an oncoming car. Both teens were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown for treatment.

Linde Finsrud Wilson, chief executive officer of Sharon Regional Health System, will present a free community program on “The Future of Healthcare” from 5 to 7 p.m. next Tuesday at Sharon Regional’s Hubbard Diagnostic & Specialty Center, 800 West Liberty St., Hubbard. Wilson’s presentation begins at 5:30 p.m.

The Struthers school board will have a special meeting at 4 p.m. today at the board of education office, 99 Euclid Ave. The purpose of the meeting is to conduct interviews for the position of superintendent.

Bike-safety event

The Mill Creek MetroParks’ Bike Smart! program will teach children bike safety techniques and apply learned skills on a short 10-mile bike ride.

The event is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 in Canfield and will be instructed by Christian Hunter, MetroParks police bike-patrol officer, and Angela McGrady, recreation-program coordinator.

Participants will bike five miles to the Kirk Road Trailhead, eat lunch, then bike back to the farm. Bikers are asked to bring a bike, helmet and packed lunch.

The cost for Mahoning County residents is $2, and nonresidents will pay $3.

Pruning workshop

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. is hosting a “Pruning and Managing Community Forests” workshop as part of their Vacant Land Reuse Workshop series from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The workshop, on Mineral Springs Avenue, is free. The seminar will explain tree maintenance including watering, pruning and preventing and identifying disease. For information, call 330-480-0423.

IdoraFest planned

The Idora Neighborhood Association will have its annual IdoraFest from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday on McFarland Avenue. The free event will include a pig and chicken roast, games for children and families and entertainment. Participants are encouraged to bring a covered dish.

Woman robbed

BROOKFIELD

An elderly woman was robbed of a 32-inch television set at her home on South Stateline Road at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

The woman noticed a white male in his late teens or early 20s walking near her home not long before she found him inside her house, Brookfield Police Chief Dan Faustino said.

A neighbor also saw the man before the theft. The woman was not injured in the incident, Faustino said.

Volunteers sought for cleanup effort

YOUNGSTOWN

More volunteers are needed for the Westside Citizens Coalition ramp cleanup to help clear litter from the Interstate 680 on- and off-ramps on the city’s West Side. Four ramps are targeted for the event Saturday: Oakwood, Connecticut, Belle Vista and Manhattan. Volunteers are asked to meet at 9 a.m. near the tennis courts at Borts Field.

There will be a brief safety course to instruct volunteers on the removal of items. Teams will be assigned to ramps, and volunteers will be provided with vests, gloves, bags and tools to safely complete the tasks.

After the cleanup, volunteers will be treated to a lunch/snack provided by Foxy’s on Meridian Road. For information, call 330-774-4361 or 330-770-7375.
