1862: More than 3,600 men are killed, many more wounded, captured or left missing, in the Civil War Battle of Antietam in Maryland.

1787: The Constitution of the U.S. is completed and signed by a majority of delegates attending the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.

1911: Calbraith P. Rodgers sets off from Sheepshead Bay, N.Y., aboard a Wright biplane in an attempt to become the first flier to travel the width of the United States. (The 49-day journey required 69 stops before ending in Pasadena, Calif.)

1937: The likeness of President Abraham Lincoln’s head is dedicated at Mount Rushmore.

1971: Citing health reasons, Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, 85, retires.

1972: The Korean War comedy-drama “M-A-S-H” premieres on CBS.

1978: After meeting at Camp David, Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat sign a framework for a peace treaty.

1987: Robert Horvath unveils a bobsled designed by Ohio State students in cooperation with Youngstown businessmen. Horvath will drive the bobsled in Germany in an attempt to make the U.S. Olympic team.

Mahoning County voters will decide in May whether they want a 911 emergency phone system funded by a 0.09-mill levy that would cost the owner of a $50,000 home less than $2 per year.

1972: Two Ohioans are among the newest group of nine astronauts, Neil A. Armstrong, 32, and James A. Lovell, 34, a native of Cleveland.

Anthony Vivo, Mahoning County clerk of courts, is presented an award of merit from the State Department for “outstanding community service” during citizenship ceremonies in Mahoning County Courthouse.

1962:Dr. Robert V.C. Carr wins the Best in Show award at the 26th annual Mahoning Valley Stamp Club exhibit at the Butler Institute of American Art. Other winners include W.C. Clatterbuck, Laura Carr and Joseph Pogany.

1937: Police Capt. Charles Richmond, testifying before a Labor Relations Board hearing in Youngstown, says pickets blocked Division Street from traffic during the steel strike and only dispersed after repeated police warnings.

Youngstown police seize a cargo of 185 gallons of bootleg liquor after a small sedan collides with a coal truck at Guadalupe and Francisco avenues. Two youths jumped from the car and fled.
