Crash in Boardman
Boardman
A man was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center after a car traveling south on Glenwood Avenue near Boardman Plaza struck the driver’s side of his vehicle at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Police said the southbound driver turned left, striking the other vehicle, which was heading north. The driver traveling south was cited for failing to stop.

Making Kids Count, a nonproft group, will launch an after-school tutoring program at Struthers Elementary School for kids who need extra help in school but cannot pay for a tutor. The program will run two days per week from October through May for third- and fourth-graders who will be chosen based on recommendation and need. The program needs volunteers in the Youngstown area who can give an hour or so of time weekly. Students will receive extra support and small-group instruction they may not receive in class.
Navy Lt. honored
STATE COLLEGE, Pa.
Penn State students have paid tribute to a late Navy lieutenant who was the school’s only Medal of Honor recipient. Penn State unveiled the new Veterans Plaza on campus Friday — a day before its football game against Navy. The plaza includes a curved wall dedicated to Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy, a 1998 graduate. He was posthumously awarded the medal for leading a four-member SEAL team against overwhelming odds in a gun battle in eastern Afghanistan in 2005. Already shot, Murphy left a protected position to get to a clearing where he was exposed to gunfire to get a clear signal to Bagram Airfield to relay the dire situation. He was killed, along with two members of his team and 16 rescuers — eight Navy SEALs and eight members of the Army’s elite Night Stalkers — after their helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade. The Veterans Plaza was a gift from the Class of 2011. Murphy’s father, thanked the students for honoring his son.
