BOARDMAN

AT&T opened a new, 4,600-square-foot retail store at 650 Boardman- Canfield Road on Tuesday.

To serve a growing number of customers shopping for smartphones, tablets and advanced wireless services, the company wanted more room to display its products.

The new location will allow customers to test devices and services and try out wireless applications.

Some of the apps featured at Tuesday’s grand opening included AT&T Navigator, which provides GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directions, and AT&T Family Map, a family- locator service designed to help give parents peace of mind.

The company also offered communication safety tips, with the effects of Hurricane Sandy still lingering in the area.

AT&T recommends keeping solar-powered and hand-crank chargers and batteries on hand to keep phones fully powered during an emergency. It suggested the StopDisaster App, which outlines the necessary preparations for an emergency, including what a proper relief kit consists of.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also offers text-message updates throughout emergencies. Users can sign up by texting “PREPARE” to 43362.

AT&T was reminding its customers Tuesday that they can donate $10 to those affected by Hurricane Sandy by texting “REDCROSS” to 90999. Customers will be billed for the donation on their next monthly statement.

The new Boardman location will be open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
