1921: The silent film classic “The Sheik,” starring Rudolph Valentino, premieres in Los Angeles.

1938: The radio play “The War of the Worlds,” starring Orson Welles, airs on CBS.

1945: The U.S. government announces the end of shoe rationing, effective at midnight.

1953: Gen. George C. Marshall is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

1961: The Soviet Party Congress unanimously approves a resolution ordering the removal of Josef Stalin’s body from Lenin’s tomb.

1974: Muhammad Ali knocks out George Foreman in the eighth round in Kinshasa, Zaire, known as the “Rumble in the Jungle,” to regain his world heavyweight title.

LTV Steel Corp. retirees from northern Ohio are working the Capitol Hill corridors hoping to help break a legislative logjam that is blocking temporary and long-term measures to protect the benefits of retirees from bankrupt firms.

Brett A. Johnson of Indianapolis comes to Youngstown to seek aid in dismantling two roller coasters at Idora Park and moving them to a site that would be developed by the Historic Amusement Foundation Inc., which he heads.

1972: John J. Sheehan, the legislative director of the United Steelworkers of America, declares during a meeting in Youngstown that the union has put a high priority in the next Congress for legislation to protect workers pension rights.

The Vindicator’s straw poll predicts that President Richard Nixon will carry Mahoning County over Democrat George McGovern with 55 percent of the vote.

1962: The Youngstown Metropolitan Area Development Citizens Committee has made significant progress toward community improvement though concrete results are slow in coming, Donald B. McKay, president, tells the group’s directors.

The Mahoning County Board of Elections, which sought a $4,000 increase in its budget to finish 12962, files suit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court seeking to force county commissioners to provide the funds.

1937: Ralph G. Stewart, Woodworth store proprietor, and P.D. Coler, Boardman Road farmer, capture a four-foot alligator in a creek across Market Street from Stewart’s store. They subsequently learned that the animal had escaped a month earlier from a pond at the nearby home of Dr. Armin Elsaesser.

Clergymen representing the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths broadcast an appeal during a 15-minute program on WKBN urging support for the four Youngstown tax and bond issues that will be on the November ballot.
