Rev. Lonnie A. Simon, pastor, civil-rights activist, dies

YOUNGSTOWN — The Rev. Lonnie A. Simon, who retired in 1995 after more than 33 years as pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church in Youngstown, died Monday night.

The Rev. Mr. Simon, a longtime civil-rights activist, served as a chant leader during the Aug. 28, 1963, March on Washington, in which the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famed "I Have a Dream" speech.

He also participated in a 300-member black delegation that visited West Africa for an African American Summit in 1991 with the late Coretta Scott King.
