Mathews school board plans executive session

The Mathews school board will have a special meeting, executive session only, at 7 p.m. today in the Mathews High School ibrary, 4429 Warren-Sharon Road. The purpose of the meeting is to consider compensation with respect to a public employee or official. No action will be taken.

Church safe stolen

The pastor of a Campbell church arrived at his office to discover it had been ransacked and a safe was stolen.

Police said the pastor of the Bible Baptist Church on Lettie Avenue discovered the burglary Sunday morning. There was $100 in the safe.

Habitat open house

Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County is having an open house and customer appreciation day at its ReStore facility, 480 Youngstown-Poland Road, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday .

The public is invited to come dressed in Halloween costumes and receive a discount coupon usable toward a future purchase. There will be doughnuts, cookies, candy and apple cider, games and door prizes and select items on sale in the store, said Monica Craven, executive director.

ReStore sells new and lightly used building materials and household goods to the general public while benefiting Habitat for Humanity, Craven said.

Decorations stolen from nursing home

A Struthers nursing home lost its Christmas decorations in a burglary.

Campbell police reported that Maplecrest Nursing Home’s decorations were stolen from a storage unit at Uncle Joe’s Storage on state Route 616.

The theft occurred sometime Sunday or Monday overnight, police said.

Lane restrictions set for US Route 224

POLAND

U.S. Route 224 at Pennsylvania Avenue has various lane restrictions for the installation of a new traffic signal, the Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 said.

This work is part of a $100,000 project to install a new traffic signal at the intersection near the Poland post office. The entire project is scheduled to be completed by mid-November. The lights will run on the same schedule as the other traffic signals on Route 224 and state Route 170 in Poland and blink yellow during off hours, ODOT officials said.

Retro dance party planned at church

Rockin’ Out at “The Episcopal,” a free retro dance party, is Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic St. NE.

The church sponsored dances Saturday nights during the 1960s and 1970s, and this Friday, guests can don their 1960s and 1970s threads and dance to the sounds of Doug Thomas and The Sonic Boomers who will perform music by The Beatles, Byrds, Rolling Stones, Credence Clearwater Revival, ZZ Top and others. Concessions will include Christ Church Chili.

The evening festivities will start with an Evensong worship service at 6 p.m. led by the Rev. J. Jeffrey Baker. For information, call 330-372-4998.

Learning program

The PREP Learning Center presents the LEAPS STEM Program (Learning, Experimenting, Analyzing and Problem Solving) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the ITT Technical Institute, 1030 N. Meridian Road.

The free event, for children in grades five through eight, includes performing safe, electronic experiments in a laboratory setting. Free pizza and pop will be provided to students in attendance. The event is sponsored by NASA and the ITT Technical Institute. Registration is required. To register for the event, call 330-333-3104.

Volunteer-assisted demolition project

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. will help fight blight in the city by completing a volunteer-assisted demolition project.

The demolition of a garage at 703 Samuel Ave. will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday. The YNDC will provide hard hats, gloves and eye protection for all volunteers, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own axes or sledgehammers if they own them.

Team to make blankets for needy

The Destination Imagination team at East High School will be making blankets for the needy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school.

Team members will be making the blankets and also hope for help from the community.

The students have been making the blankets for people in need for the last couple of years. The project coincides with Make a Difference Day.
