Award-winning New York author and columnist Susan Ewing signed books and gave members of a local writers group advice and inspiration during her visit at Peaberry’s Cafe in Boardman Sept. 17.

Ewing, who is the author of several dog breed books and a recipient of the Cat Writer’s Association Muse medallion, combines her love of animals and writing in her column and attributes her success to simple luck.

“I’ve always loved animals and I’ve always loved writing. My writing thing had been dumb luck. I’ve been really lucky that editors liked what I’ve done and wanted more. I like feeling like I’ve made a difference in people’s lives about their animals. It’s also fun when you’re walking through the grocery store and someone ask me if I’m the dog lady,” said Ewing.

Ewing provided encouragement for aspiring authors, urging participants to continue to pursue their craft and how to improve their writing skills.

Some participants were excited to meet an established writer and also took the opportunity to get some pet advice.

“It’s always good to touch base with someone who actually makes money off writing, because most of us don’t think most writers have a vivid imagination. It’s good to roll ideas off other’s minds and I’m always glad to talk about writing. It gives you hope,” said Claudia Sturtz.
