Girard residents to vote on renewal levy for garbage pickup

City residents will see a 0.8-mill renewal levy for garbage pickup when they visit the polls Nov. 6.
The existing five-year levy allows for once-a-week garbage pickup throughout the city and will continue if approved, said Mayor James Melfi.
“This is a program that has always helped Girard,” he said. “The city has chosen to have the levy in place to pick up garbage on a consistent basis.”
He said the levy and service have been in place for 35 years and Girard maintains a clean city because it takes care of home garbage pickup once a week. Melfi said passage of the levy would ensure the service is maintained.
The 0.8-mill renewal would cost the owner of a $100,000 home roughly $22 a year, while the city would receive $75,641 in annual revenue.
Melfi said the service currently is contracted to Allied Waste Services in Youngstown. He said Allied services’ pickup is Thursdays and Fridays. The five-year contract with the company costs the city roughly $500,000.
