Man charged with running down two boys, killing one.

NEW CASTLE, Pa.

A New Castle man is in Lawrence County jail without bond today, accused of running over two children — killing one of them. Virgil Eldon Coonfare, 66, of Deckford Street, is charged with homicide by vehicle while driving under the influence.

Octavius Stone, 7, of Winslow Avenue in New Castle, was killed and a play mate, Ozzy Velez, 9, of Volant was injured.

The accident happened at 2:15 p.m. Sunday in front of 941 Winslow Ave., the home of Ozzy’s grandmother. Witnesses said Coonfare turned left from Stanton Street onto Winslow, and ran up over the sidewalk and the steps, and into the yard where the children were standing.

After running them over, witnesses said, he continued driving. A neighbor chased him, forcing him to stop, striking a bush several blocks down the street. Witnesses said the scene was horrific.
