Jury selection starts in Akron for Jamelle Jackson

AKRON

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of Jamelle Jackson, 20, of West Boston Avenue, in the Feb. 6, 2011, mass shooting that left one person dead and 11 others wounded at a house party near Youngstown State University.

In Mahoning County’s first trial re-location in 19 years, Judge John M. Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court moved Jackson’s trial to Summit County Common Pleas Court in Akron due to extensive publicity concerning the case in the Youngstown area.

Jackson is charged with the murder of Jamail Johnson, a 25-year-old YSU senior, and with 11 counts of felonious assault.

Judge Durkin sentenced Columbus Jones Jr., 24, of Cambridge Avenue, to 92 years in prison after he was convicted of the same charges in a jury trial in Mahoning County. Prosecutors allege that Jackson and Jones were the shooters.
