Violent crime takes no holiday in Youngstown

Some area residents celebrated Thanksgiving with family or kicking off the holiday shopping season, but others marked it with robbery, assault and mayhem.
Youngstown police recorded two felonious assaults, a simple assault and two robberies in the hours just before and during Thanksgiving.
A 34-year-old city man told police he was walking in the 100 block of Hilton Avenue Thursday when he was approached by two men asking for a cigarette. The man said he offered the cigarette, but the two men produced guns and ordered him to the ground.
They said they’d kill him if he did not comply, then took his cigarettes and wallet. He returned to the area after calling police and found the stolen pack of cigarettes.
A 21-year-old city man told police he too was walking down a city block in the area of Dennick Avenue and Ohio Avenue when he noticed a man walking behind him mumbling. His girlfriend pulled up to pick him up as he walked, and the man behind him pulled out a gun and fired a shot at the car as he got in and pulled away.
The man told police the unknown assailant chased after the car, firing one more shot. No one was hit, but police noted two bullet holes in the car from the shooting.
A 32-year-old South Side man told police he noticed an altercation between a group of male juveniles just outside his Hudson Avenue home Wednesday afternoon and went outside to separate them. But one of the boys took out a large knife and lunged in his direction. The man was stabbed in the upper thigh. Four of the boys ran off, but the boy they were fighting stayed and called his mother from the injured man’s home.
The man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and was in stable condition Friday.
A 15-year-old city teen told police he was assaulted on North Osborn Avenue by a female adult during a Wednesday argument with other juveniles over a bicycle. The boy said he was arguing with the three juveniles, age 7, 8 and 9, when the mother of the children punched him in the face. Police noted swelling to the boy’s face.
A 22-year-old Austintown man told police he was at a Mahoning Avenue business paying bills Wednesday afternoon when a woman snatched a $100 bill from his hand and jumped into a car and took off.
