Earlier this month, Youngstown State University sent six teams to the Midwest Regional Tournament of the American Collegiate Moot Court Association.

Seven schools entered the tournament — Wooster, Denison, Marietta College, Ohio Wesleyan, Notre Dame College, Saginaw Valley State and YSU.

At the end of first day, YSU advanced five teams to the second day of competition. Entering the second day, YSU teams were seeded first, second, third, fifth and 12th.

YSU also took second and fourth in the individual scoring out of 80 students. Those were Zach White and Jake Schriner-Briggs, respectively. All YSU team members are graduates of Mahoning Valley high schools.

Three YSU teams reached round eight: White and Josh Prest; Catie Carney and James Toliver; and Mike Goldthwait and Kayla Schindler. These three teams are automatic qualifiers to the National Tournament at Regent Law School in Virginia Beach in January.

The YSU coalition hopes one more team receives an at-large invitation.

White and Prest are the 2012 Midwest Regional runner-up, losing in the championship round to Wooster. The judges said that, in their opinion, White was the best individual in the championship round.
