Tree chosen

Youngstown

The city has chosen a Christmas tree for the 2012 holiday season.

The 30-foot Colorado blue spruce is being donated by the Vecchiarelli family of Youngstown. Diamond Steel Construction will assist the Department of Parks and Recreation staff in removing and transporting the tree downtown to Central Square.

The tree is scheduled to arrive on the square at approximately 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Promotions granted

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Fire Department Monday promoted four firefighters.

Two firefighters were promoted to lieutenants, and two lieutenants were promoted to captains.

DeMaine Kitchen, city chief of staff, and Fire Chief John O’Neill held the swearing in ceremony at the departments main fire station downtown.

Promoted to the rank of lieutenant were Michael Evatz and Christian Brown. Promoted to the rank of captain were Anthony Burnett and Daniel Holcomb.

Break-in at church

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are looking for the people responsible for breaking into the office of a South Side Church on Sunday while services were in session.

The Rev. Kenneth Simon told police someone entered the church offices at New Bethel Baptist Church on Hillman Street during a 7:30 a.m. worship service. He said the individual entered a mail cabinet and stole numerous envelopes that had been placed there for the church treasurer. Some of the letters were found open and discarded on the floor.

The Rev. Mr. Simon said the thieves also tried to enter several locked offices without success.

Checkpoint arrests

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County OVI Task Force conducted a sobriety checkpoint Friday on Mahoning Avenue that netted three arrests for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

The checkpoint was staffed with 11 police officers and 290 vehicles passed through it, according to a news release.

Officers issued three summons for driving under suspension, four summons for drug abuse and two summons for drug paraphernalia.
