Vigil for Palestinians in Central Square set

YOUNGSTOWN

Arab American Community Center of Greater Youngstown, Coalition for Peace in the Middle East/Peace Action Youngstown, Valley Coalition for Peace and Justice, and Women in Black are sponsoring a vigil today in support of the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The vigil will be from 4 to 5 p.m. on Central Square in downtown Youngstown. At least 21 Gazans, including an 11-month-old baby have been killed so far by Israeli attacks in Gaza.

The vigil is part of several scheduled today and over the weekend nationwide seeking peace and justice in the Middle East.

Honor to Gateways

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County commissioners issued a resolution in honor of the 40th anniversary of Gateways to Better Living, a nonprofit organization that provides housing and vocational services to more than 150 developmentally disabled adults.

Gateways started with a single group home on Fifth Avenue in 1972 and now serves clients at 22 Mahoning County locations, Bob Wirtz, Gateways program director, told the commissioners Thursday.

YSU program probed

Youngstown

An Ohio inspector-general compliance review of Youngstown State University’s federal work-study program found some incomplete student-employment forms but no other issues.

Ron Cole, YSU spokesman, said YSU will follow the recommendations in the report.

The investigation took place to comply with a law requiring the inspector general to monitor the spending of federal funds received by the state under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009.

Checkpoint tonight

Canfield

The Mahoning County Operating a Vehicle While Impaired Task Force will conduct a sobriety checkpoint today to deter and catch impaired drivers. Details will be announced later, and saturation patrols will be conducted throughout the weekend.

Support in operating the checkpoint and saturation patrols will be provided by task force agencies and the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
