Columbiana County Auditor Nancy Milliken announced that senior citizens at least 65 years old and disabled homeowners who are not already enrolled in the property-tax relief program known as the homestead exemption have until Monday to sign up for the 2012 tax year.

The homestead exemption allows eligible homeowners, regardless of income, the opportunity to shield $25,000 of the market value of their homestead (a dwelling and up to one acre of land) from property taxation.

To be eligible, you must own your property and consider that property your primary residence. Owners of manufactured homes also are eligible for the exemption. The law allows for only one exemption per owner or home.

Forms are available on the county auditor’s website at www.columbianacntyauditor.org and also at the county auditor’s office. If filing by mail, you must include a copy of your photo ID, and it must be postmarked no later than Monday. If you are filing for reason of disability, you must produce your Social Security award letter.
