Westlake, Orange boys win tennis crowns

COLUMBUS

Colton Buffington, a senior from Westlake, defeated Lakota East’s Zach Mueck, 6-2, 6-3, to claim the Division I boys singles state championship.

Mueck, a senior, finished as the Div. I singles runner-up for the third consecutive year.

In the consolation bracket, Walsh Jesuit’s Aaron Sandberg defeated Perrysburg’s Jeffrey Schorsch 6-2, 6-1.

In Div. I doubles, Mason’s Miguel Cepeda and Luke Tsai defeated Cincinnati Sycamore’s Yuri Karev and Nakul Narendran 6-1, 6-1.

In the consolation match, Sycamore’s other team of Dylan Stern and Nikhil Grandhi defeating Bellbrook’s Jackson Heinz and Wyatt Heinz 6-4, 6-2. Sycamore was the only school in the tournament to qualify two doubles teams.

In Div. II singles, Orange’s Maksim Kan defeated Cincinnati Country Day’s Patrick Wildman 6-1, 6-0, in the championship match.

In the consolation bracket, Asher Hirsch of Cincinnati Country Day defeated Bexley senior Matt Wareti, 6-3, 6-4.

The Division II doubles championship saw Hawken’s Daniel Lubarsky and Siddarth Ahuja defeat Lima Central Catholic’s John Kidd and Alex Swick in a match that lasted two hours and 45 minutes, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.

In the consolation, Gilmour Academy’s Mike Riley and Weston Noall defeated Toledo Maumee Valley Country Day’s Grant MacPherson and Stephen Shin 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
