Golfers, sponors needed for tournament

The Canfield Community Care Net is looking for golfers and sponsors to participate in its 11th annual Golf Classic on June 1 at Mill Creek Golf Course. Since the summer of 2002, the organization has dispersed $300,000 to help area families suffering from life-threatening illnesses. Brochures on the golf event can be picked up at the entrance doors of St. Michaels Parish or by calling 330-207-6733.

Canfield hosts alumni basketball league

The Canfield High School coaching staff is looking to put together an alumni basketball summer league for all former Canfield boys basketball players. There will be a schedule of games created based on the number of those interested.

‘Boom Boom’ Mancini biography planned

A biography on Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini called “The Good Son” is scheduled to be released in September. The book is written by Mark Kriegel, who also wrote bestselling biographies on “Pistol” Pete Maravich and Joe Namath. Mancini, who grew up on the South Side, was the WBA lightweight champion from 1982-84.

Diane McCall honored

Diane McCall, the Canfield High School girl’s golf coach, was inducted into the Ohio High School golf coaches hall of fame.

McCall helped to begin the Canfield High team in 1997. During her 15-year tenure, the Cardinals have won 11 league titles, eight sectional championships, and three state trips. They have a 237-53 record in that span.

Dustin Brode wins shot put at Penn Relays

Dustin Brode, a graduate of Canfield and a sophomore at Harvard, won the NCAA Division I East Region shot put championship at the Penn Relays. Brode put the shot 17.63 meters. Next up for him is the NCAA East Regional in Jacksonville Fla.

Brode received the school’s track and field team’s Beyond the Call of Duty award for throwing three events this season — shot put, discus and hammer throw.
