NV wildfire guts homes, casts haze over wide area

HOLBROOK JUNCTION, Nev. (AP) — Rugged terrain is forcing firefighting crews to concentrate on an aerial attack to try to slow a 6,600-acre wildfire that destroyed two homes near the California-Nevada line.

The fire was burning today within about two miles of the Upper Canyon Road residential area in rural Lyon County about 60 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe.

As many as 120 homes continue to be threatened but all evacuations have been lifted.

Four air tankers and three helicopters are aiding nearly 400 firefighters.

Investigators think the fire probably started with a residential burn that had been smoldering since Sunday and suddenly burst into flames Tuesday at Topaz Ranch Estates.

Full containment of the fire is projected by Saturday.
