VIENNA

About 20 people gathered for prayer Saturday at an injection well in Vienna Township, according to the environmental group Ohio Fracktion.

The Rev. Monica Beasley-Martin of Liberty Township delivered a sermon in which she spoke to humankind’s biblical responsibility to act as guardians of the earth and decried hydraulic fracturing and other forms of gas and oil extraction.

“We are allowing such things as tar-sands extraction, offshore drilling, mountain-top removal and hydraulic fracturing, which is becoming increasingly popular locally, to destroy both the earth God created and one another,” she said, according to the press release.

The Rev. Beasley-Martin did not return a phone call Sunday night seeking comment.

Injection wells are a disposal method for brine, a salty, chemical byproduct of natural-gas and oil drilling.
