Fla. man charged in downtown stabbing

YOUNGSTOWN

Police charged Morris W. Haas, 49, of Maitland, Fla., with felonious assault after he reportedly stabbed another man during a Thursday night fight near the Draught House, 219 W. Federal St.

Police said Haas and James Cobb were fighting in front of the tavern, and Haas had lost the fight. Haas then pulled out a box cutter and cut Cobb several times.

Cobb went to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was in stable condition Thursday night. The hospital, however, had no record of him Friday night.

Haas also suffered a minor head cut in the fight and received treatment at St. Elizabeth.

When police arrived at 9:20 p.m., Haas was bleeding from his head and had blood on his arms. A woman had already taken Cobb to the hospital.

After Youngstown fall, ex-official seeks release

AKRON

Attorneys for a former county commissioner convicted of corruption in northeast Ohio are seeking his release from prison before his sentencing because of new health concerns.

Lawyers on Friday told a federal judge that former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora should be freed pending sentencing because of medical issues discovered after he fell at a Youngstown correctional facility earlier this month.

Attorneys said in court filings that he has an aneurysm and a dark mass behind his tonsils. They say his health problems would interfere with any perceived flight risk.

Dimora was convicted of racketeering, bribery and other counts in March. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

The filing coincided with federal prosecutors asking U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi to dismiss four charges remaining against Dimora.
