A group of Girls Scouts put together crafts during the weekend event at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

The year-long celebration of the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary continued April 27-29 as more than 1,500 Girl Scouts attending a camporee event at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Some participated in activities during the day, but others pitched their tents at the fairgrounds and camped all weekend.

The Scouts fanned out to activities that included interactive displays by NASA; Humane Society petting area; live birds of prey from Quail Hollow State Park; and an up-close and personal encounter with an alligator and iguana brought by Alligator Eric.

There were steel drum performances, an actress who played the part of Juliet Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, and a Girl Scout fashion show of historical uniforms spanning a century of Girl Scouts. There were also traditional Girl Scout activities, including campfire songs and s’mores, archery, crafts, and troop reunions.

The Girl Scout celebration also included a service project, as donated cans of food were used to build a ‘canstruction’ in the shape of a Girl Scout birthday cake. The cans were then transported to the Second Harvest Food Bank for distribution to families in need.

The Girl Scouts organization was founded on March 12, 1912 with 18 girls in Savannah, Ga., and grew into a movement of 50 million strong. Girl Scouts has done more than any other organization to provide leadership opportunities for girls in the United States and around the world.

The local council, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio, has 40,000 girls and 14,000 adult members in 18 counties.

The next Girl Scouts 100th anniversary camporee will be the weekend Sept. 28 at the Lorain County Fairgrounds. Registration is now open at www.gsneo.org/special events.
