Williams loses to Lundy at Foxwoods

NABF lightweight champ survives knockdown

MASHANTUCKET, CONN.

Late in the first round of his NABF lightweight championship fight against Henry Lundy, Dannie Williams connected with a left hook to the temple that dropped his opponent to one knee.

Williams, though, was unable to find another punch like that the rest of the night, suffering a loss by unanimous decision in the main event of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights at Foxwoods Casino.

Williams, now 21-2 overall with 17 wins by knockout, hurt Lundy with less than a minute remaining in the opening round, which resulted in a standing-8 count.

Until then, neither fighter landed many punches. Williams had a big roundhouse that missed about midway through the round that drew gasps from the crowd.

Lundy had the upper hand in the second round, cornering Williams with a combination with about 40 seconds remaining.

The third round was easily the best of the early rounds. Both fighters got in good punches. Williams hurt Lundy more, but Lundy countered with some rights that stunned Williams.

The fourth round action slowed again. Williams was the aggressor early in the round but Lundy had more punches land.

But as the fight progressed, Lundy controlled the action with his jab as he switched from lefty to righty and back again.

In the fifth round Lundy connected consistently with his jab and he hurt Williams in the sixth with a right-hand jab and, later, a combination.

In the eighth round Lundy again connected consistently.

The judges scored the bout 98-91, 97-92, 97-92.
