BOARDMAN

Mahoning County Recycling Division will sponsor the Green Idol Earth Day singing contest at noon April 14 in Boardman Township Park.

Mahoning County students in grades K-12 are eligible to participate and must sing an Earth-friendly song. Advance registration is required by calling Peg Flynn at the recycling division at 330-740-2060 by Wednesday.

Bus driver, aide are suspended

CANFIELD

A Canfield school bus driver and the bus’s aide are suspended for five days without pay, after a 4-year-old preschool student was left on the school bus.

21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, reported the boy, who is a student at the MCCTC preschool, fell asleep on the bus Wednesday, and the bus driver never stopped at his home. The waiting parents were told their son was put on the bus and dropped off at his home.

But the school district soon learned the child was still on the parked bus. Along with the suspension, all drivers have been warned that they must double-check that no children remain on the bus at the end of their route, school officials said.

New citizens

Youngstown

Six people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday naturalization ceremony conducted by Judge Mark Belinky of Mahoning County Probate Court. The new citizens, their hometowns and countries of origin are: Atif Iqbal Qazi and Meher Afroz, both of Canfield, both from Bangladesh; Martha Hernandez, Youngstown, Mexico; Khaldoun Kawa, Liberty, Syria; Faheem Saleem, Austintown, Pakistan; Hasan Rasmi Hasan Mousa, Boardman, Jordan.

Census program

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host “Researching in the 1940 Census” by Wallace Huskonen at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Quaker Room.

The National Archives and Records Administration will release the 1940 Census on Monday. It will be available online free for family-history researchers, but initially, it will not have an index.

Huskonen, who has conducted genealogical research for almost 20 years, will outline the steps necessary to make a successful search under these conditions. He will discuss how he gathered information and constructed a “Persons of Interest List” of people he will be looking for in the 1940 Census.

Trash-bag costs

POLAND

Republic Service (Allied Waste) has increased the price of garbage bags to $20 per bundle. The garbage bags are sold at the Poland Township administration building, 3339 Dobbins Road.

Dealerships report converter thefts

WARREN

Three car dealerships on East Market Street and Youngstown Road reported Thursday that catalytic converters had been stolen from cars on their lots.

Finest Used Cars, 621 E. Market St., reported six missing; All Makes Auto Sales, 2716 Youngstown Road SE, reported four missing; and BK Auto Repair, 945 E. Market St., reported two missing.
