Junior students in the cosmetology program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center hosted their annual Nail-A-Thon fundraiser March 15.

The students offered manicures, facials, waxing, therapeutic hand waxing and pedicures during the event.

According to instructor Linda Tomko, the proceeds from the event will benefit the Junior Cosmetology class.

“The Nail-A-Thon is held to give the students an opportunity to raise money to help defer the costs of the state board test they will take next year. It will be used for travel, food and hotels for the students,” Tomko said.

The class includes 19 students and each student was responsible for bringing in five customers. “The students had to promote the event themselves and had to bring in at least five customers. They had to be resourceful and several of them brought in more than five. We have had a phenomenal turnout. The day has been a big success and I am very pleased with the students,” Tomko said.

According to Tomko, the event was not just about raising money.

“Not only does this event raise money, it also counts toward the students’ grade. The students must be dressed appropriately, act professionally and meet the criteria for earning the points for class,” Tomko said.
