Boardman track girls begin season with a win


The Boardman girls outdoor track team opened its 2012 outdoor season with an 88-49 convincing win over Cleveland Beaumont last weekend.

The team showed very solid balance as the running events and field events both scored 44 points for the team overall. In the field events, the high jump, long jump, shot put and pole vault events swept by taking all three places in each event.

“I always like to have a meet before we start our League competition just so we can get our strategy in order for the league opener,” said head coach Denise Gorski.

“I was very impressed with the competitiveness of this entire team. We also showed good team balance between our field and running events.

“I’m excited to see what this team can accomplish in the next few weeks. They were fun to watch on Saturday.”

In the shot put, junior Giovanni Silvestri took first with a toss of 33-8, freshman Ka’Nisha White placed second, throwing a career-best of 32-6 æ. In the discus, Silvestri won her second event, throwing 99-8 and Watkins was second with a 98-10.

In the long jump, junior Lauren Davila won the event with a jump of 14-9 Ω. Sophomore Morgan Hambrick was second with a jump of 14-4 æ. Hambrick also won the high jump at 4-8 and sophomore Kelly Tomcsanyi was second with a 4-6.

The pole vaulters swept their event with junior Sarina Mauerman placing first with a vault of 8-6. Senior Jenny Bresnahan was second with a leap of 7-6.

In the distance events, freshman indoor state qualifier Jordan Grantonic won the 1600 in 5:40.8 and sophomore Emma Schwendeman was second with a 5:42.5. Schwendeman came back in the 800 to win with a time of 2:31.8. In the 3200-meter run, senior Carmen Moradian was third, running a time of 14:15.6.

In the sprint and hurdle events, Davila won the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.5 and freshman Hope Landers was second in 18.2. In the 300-meter hurdles, Davila placed second in 57.3.

The 4x100 relay team won in a time of 53.5 and consisted of Landers, Hambrick, Hillard and Koch as the anchor leg. In the 400, senior Tori Moore was first, running 63.9 and came back to anchor the winning 4x400 meter relay team in a time of 4:27.5. Her teammates on the relay included Heaton O’Hara, Koch and Regan O’Hara.
