One of two men burned in Struthers explosion has died

STRUTHERS — One of two men who were severely burned in an explosion at the Struthers Wastewater Treatment Plant has died.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s office said Gary Wilson, who was an assistant maintenance man at the plant, died at 3 p.m. today.

Wilson and Ken Stiver, the plant’s lead maintenance man, suffered second- and third-degree burns over 95 percent of their bodies after methane gas built up and was ignited by a spark as the men were working on wiring in the plant’s gas compressor room March 1.

They have been at UPMC Mercy Hospital’s burn unit since the accident, which the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is still investigating.
