Failure to appear in petty-theft case

WARREN

Ashley Kirk, 34, failed to appear for his arraignment Monday in Warren Municipal Court on a misdemeanor charge of petty theft, accused of stealing a donation jar containing about $90 being collected by a military veteran’s organization.

A man who had been collecting money Friday for Veteran’s Outreach at the Giant Eagle on Mahoning Avenue said he had gone to the restroom and asked a customer to watch the money jar for him. The jar was bolted to a table.

The customer was waiting in a truck near the store and gave police a description of the man who took the jar by prying it from the table at about 11 a.m., police said.

Kirk was found walking a short distance away with cash in his hands and pockets. He was brought back to the store and identified, police said. The incident also was captured on store security video.
